‘ To promote and enjoy singing as a pleasurable activity, both for the choir and for the audience’
‘ The only thing better than singing is more singing’
Doncaster Ladies Choir was born out of a love for singing and a genuine enthusiasm to put on a first class performance from the very first note to the very last and that same passion is just as evident today as it was when the choir was originally formed 50 years ago.
The choir is made up of 40 devoted members from Doncaster and its surrounding districts and the musical choices reflect the wide diversity of its age groups.
As well as being talented singers, they’re all great friends and it clearly shows as soon as they step upon the stage. The minute you see them you just know you’re in for a wonderful repertoire.
Doncaster Ladies Choir hold regular concerts and singing events throughout the year in venues ranging from Concert Halls, Churches, Libraries, Community Centres, Day Centres and Care Homes, all of which help to raise valuable funds for a variety of local charities.
In addition to our seasonal programme of concerts, we are always delighted to add ‘the magic of song’ to Weddings and Special Family Occasions, where we are happy to design the choral programme around your specific tastes.
‘ Doncaster Ladies Choir is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year 1966-2016 ‘
Doncaster Ladies Choir was formed fifty years ago and was initially known as ‘The Bessacarr Townswomen’s Guild Choir’, but its name was later changed to the Doncaster Ladies Choir to better reflect the location of its members and the area it was serving.
Over the years, the choir has established itself in and around the Doncaster area and raised many thousands of pounds for charitable organisations and good causes throughout the region and although the choir has witnessed a great many changes along the way, it has remained faithful to its original premise:
‘ To promote and enjoy singing as a pleasurable activity, both for the choir and for the audience ’
Rita Hannam is an original founder member of the choir and has been in the post of Chairperson for the past four years. Along with the energy and drive of her fellow committee members and the dedication of all the choir members, Rita has been instrumental in successfully bringing the choir into the 21st century and ensuring it grows in strength with each passing year.
Doncaster Ladies Choir is fortunate to have had the services of Gwyneth Platts as it’s Musical Director since 2009. She is a member of The British Association of Choral Directors and has over 30 years experience conducting all types of choirs and covering a wide range of music both secular and religious.
Gwyn brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the choir and this coupled with her enthusiasm not only for the choir but also for singing and by building a bright and musically diverse future, she is ensuring that “music making and singing” is full of fun for everyone.
